Canada sounds like a great idea!! I grew up in a little town in northern New Mexico called Los Alamos... it's sort of in between Santa Fe and Taos. I'll definitely need to read, "Death Comes to the Archbishop"!

I could have written this article! Our 6 kids never really begged to go to Disney because they knew better. We have plenty of friends who have been there and say they had fun so I'm sure our kids think they've missed out on something grandiose. I have never been to Disney and I still feel like a complete person. I, too, hate lines. I hate listening to people yell at their kids who are probably just tired and need a nap. You say you are from New Mexico. One of our best family vacations was to Taos and Santa Fe. We went there all the way from Iowa, because my husband and I had read "Death Comes to the Archbishop" by Willa Cather. Excellent book! We've also traveled a lot because family is spread around the eastern part of the US, so Washington DC, N.Carolina and New York have all been vacation spots for us. I highly recommend the city of Quebec and the town of St. Anne de Beaupre in Canada. Absolutely beautiful! We love to travel and so our kids do, too, especially those that have been all over the country. One amusement park that we do enjoy is Cedar Point in Ohio. That place is fun!

I thought the Time piece was ridiculous and melodramatic. Isn't it impossible to nail down a generation even before many of them have arrived at adulthood? However, Micah, I don't agree that they are egocentric -- which, at any rate, adequately fits all recent generations! -- because their parents didn't give them enough quality time. It's all about technology. All generations and peoples would do the same thing, if they had the opportunity. Moreover, stories from the Greatest Generation don't reveal dawdling parents at all, and nobody would accuse them of egocentricity. My dad (b.1949) is the antithesis of narcissism and his parents paid him no mind at all except to scold him. At any rate, I find discussion of generational attributes about as enlightening as reading horoscopes: most characterizations fit most people.

Darren, thanks for the tip. My son got a perfect score on his test, by the by. My point was not that it could not be done but that just because the DRE or pastor is afraid they won't get another chance to have a child in CCD is no reason to attempt to fill the classes meant for specific Sacraments with more than the average child can handle and frankly things that are not necessary for the reception of said Sacrament. If a child can learn more, by all means offer it to them, but don't "muddy the waters" if you will by trying to do everything at once.

Try using the pegging system (google memory pegs). The five year old has the 10 commandments, 4 marks of the church, 4 gospel writers in order with symbols, and the 7 gifts of the holy spirit down cold. With a 10 or 20 peg list, you can get sock away lots of stuff. Understanding? Meh, that comes with time.
