Truth & Charity

“What is truth?” With these immortal and infamous words, Pontius Pilate rejected Jesus Christ.  What is truth?  Is it something which exists on its own, to which we all owe due reverence, or is it some passing illusion we give mere lip-service?  This was a troubling question in the ancient world, and one which kept the Roman Governor from recognizing Our Lord.  It is, likewise, a troubling question for us.  Does it also keep us from recognizing Christ? Shortly before the beginning of his pontificate, Pope Benedict XVI spoke about a growing “Dictatorship of Relativism” which sought to turn facts into opinions and objective, universal truth into subjective, relative observations. The truth He spoke to save men’s souls in charity.  The charity He lived out to serve the truth of God’s mercy and man’s goodness. Can we, like Pilate, look Him in the face and ask, “what is truth?”  Will we instead have the wisdom to see that...
